Thailand is a well-traveled country in South-East Asia, with a population of about 71 million people. The currency is Thai Baht (THB) and Thai is the main language. The capital city is Bangkok. Famous for its gorgeous beaches, delicious food, extravagant Buddhist temples, and vibrant nightlife.

Thailand is generally considered to be safe for travelers, although it is recommended to stay away from border areas. Always check your home countries’ travel advisory before heading off. In addition, it can be good to also read other countries’ advice, just to get a better idea (see for example US, Canada, Australia & UK’s advice for India).

Thailand is a medium expensive country to visit, and prices heavily fluctuate across low and high season.

Low budget travelers: 25-50 EUR /day

Itinerary

Some places tourists commonly visit are Bankok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, Krabi, Phuket, and the islands Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phi Phi.

Bangkok is a bustling city which is often used as a base to fly in or out of Thailand, but most travelers tend to not stay there very long. It is famous for its beautiful temples (Wat Pho and Wat Arun), Chinatown food market, and ofcourse its iconic nighlife on Khao San Road.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island with a famous nightlife street called Bangla Road in Patong, and endless beaches to explore. Phuket Old Town offers some history.

Koh Phangan is an island famous for its Full Moon parties. It is quite a large island offering also a variety of other activities, with lots of people going there for pilates, yoga, mindfulness and breathwork workshops.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island. It is a bit more high-end, often referred to as an excellent spot for honeymooners or family holidays. Offering tons of options for dining and vibrant nightlife.

Travel tips

Flights to Thailand are usually very cheap once you are in Asia, for example when flying in from India, Vietnam, Hong Kong or Singapore. There are daily routes from many European cities, although they are usually a bit on the pricier side (unless you opt for non-direct). The infrastructure in Thailand is generally very good, with ferries, trains and buses available and they can be easily booked online. Domestic flights can be a good option too, depending on your overall itinerary.

Don’t forget to check the visa rules well in advance. Most countries have visa-free travel to Thailand, but some travelers will need to apply for a visa.

As is true everywhere: also make sure you have an adequate travel insurance that will cover you throughout your stay. Medical help can be expensive and/or less accessible in Thailand, so make sure your travel insurance covers medical expenses and any required travel to that end.
